Iodine and differentiated thyroid cancer: pathogenetic and therapeutic implications.

چکیده
The purpose of this review is to discuss the various means by which iodine ingestion through dietary intake or therapeutic administration can influence the pathogenesis, prevalence, presentation or outcome of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). The relationship between iodine nutrition and DTC pathogenesis is complex, arising from the fundamental observation that anything that stimulates thyroid growth such as TSH, has the potential ability to promote growth and neoplastic transformation in predisposed thyroid follicular cells. One of the other major factors in the pathogenesis of thyroid cancer is previous irradiation. The mechanisms through which events leading to PTC are initiated is uncertain but RET/PTC rearrangements as well as RAS, PAX 8 and PPAR mutations have been implicated. The sources of irradiation implicated in causing PTC have included the consequences of the nuclear accident at Chernobyl where exposure to radioactive iodine may have been aggravated by the low dietary iodine intake in the affected population.

Extremity Radioactive Iodine Uptake on Post-therapeutic Whole Body Scan in Patients with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer
Objective(s): We investigated a frequency of lower extremity uptake on the radioactive iodine (RAI) whole body scan (WBS) after RAI treatment in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer, in order to retrospectively examine whether or not the frequency was pathological. Methods: This retrospective study included 170 patients with thyroid cancer, undergoing RAI treatment. Overall, 99r (58%) an...

Background: Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy in the world; however, these patients usually experience a high survival rate if they receive appropriate and timely treatment. Meanwhile, patients classified as having differentiated thyroid cancer with high thyroglobulin and negative iodine scan [Differentiated thyroid cancer with thyroglobulin elevation and negative iodine sc...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Differentiated Thyroid Cancer and the Results of the 131 Administration
Differentiated thyroid cancers (follicular and papillary) are in the group of the cancers with relatively good prognosis and most of them have tendency to absorb the Iodine, so the 131 is used for tlie ablation of the thyroid tissue, rest of the tumor and metastases. This study revealed that for this purpose most of the Iranian's patients (more than 70%)have been hospitalized more than once and...

Introduction: Nowadays, radioisotopes have a lot of therapeutic and diagnostic applications in nuclear medicine. The technetium-99m radioisotope is widely used in the diagnostic field. The technetium-99m radioisotope is widely used in the diagnostic field. In this study, in order to increase the absorption dose in thyroid cancer cells, the radioactive drug technetium-99m which ...
متن کاملA risk-adapted approach to the use of radioactive iodine and external beam radiation in the treatment of well-differentiated thyroid cancer.
BACKGROUND Both radioactive iodine (RAI) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) offer important clinical benefits in properly selected patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. With the increased emphasis on a risk-adapted model for the management of thyroid cancer, it is important to identify which patients are most likely to benefit from radiation therapies given in the adjuvant settin...
